Primary Purpose of the Position

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, WSSU has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public institutions in the nation as well as one of the best Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S. One of 17 institutions that comprise the University of North Carolina System, WSSU is a historically black college and university (HBCU), committed to the transformative power of liberal education, integrating diverse learning environments, student development opportunities, and campus and community life to build knowledge, cultivate talent and mold character. WSSU has approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in 53 academic programs, taught by a faculty of 313.

WSSU is seeking individuals with a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching and service. The candidate will understand and respect the uniqueness of each individual department within CASBE and make decisions based on their individual needs. While not expected to be an expert in all fields that comprise CASBE, the dean will appreciate the various disciplines and have the ability to provide leadership in each area. The ideal candidate will play a key role in implementing WSSU’s new strategic plan, engaging in productive and supportive endeavors, and helping to advance efforts to recruit and retain students. Further, the new dean should focus on integration of a global curriculum and making sure the current curricula aligns with the framework of a liberal education. The dean will value and embrace the traditions of our nation’s HBCUs and appreciate the significant contributions these institutions have on student success.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Qualified candidates will possess an earned doctorate with a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service that would merit appointment at the rank of tenured, full professor in a university department; a record of leadership and academic administrative experience in a liberal education institution; experience developing and implementing academic strategic plans; and providing leadership for the assessment of student learning outcomes, accreditation, and budget development.

Uniquely blending the liberal arts with professional programs in business and education, The College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education (CASBE) at WSSU offers a broad liberal education that prepares students to meet the challenges of the 21st century. CASBE is comprised of five faculties (Arts & Humanities, Business, Education, Natural and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), which organize and govern the intellectual affairs of nineteen academic departments, eight research and teaching centers, the Diggs Gallery, and a number of interdisciplinary academic initiatives.
