Primary Purpose of the Position

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, WSSU has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public institutions in the nation as well as one of the best Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S. One of 17 institutions that comprise the University of North Carolina System, WSSU is committed to the transformative power of liberal education, integrating diverse learning environments, student development opportunities, and campus and community life to build knowledge, cultivate talent and mold character. WSSU has approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in 53 academic programs, taught by a faculty of 313.

WSSU seeks a provost who appreciates the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and who understands and can articulate the value of a liberal education, embraces principles of equity, supports graduate and professional education, models faculty excellence, and can lead the campus in fulfilling the goals of its strategic plan. Qualified candidates will possess an earned doctorate, or equivalent outstanding experience, with a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits appointment at the rank of tenured, full professor in a university department. Candidates will possess a demonstrated record of leadership and academic administrative experience in a liberal education institution and academic administrative experience of graduate and professional programs. In addition, superior interpersonal and communication skills, including working effectively with faculty, diverse groups, and establishing collaborative relationships within and outside the university setting are required.

Additional requirements include: experience developing and implementing strategic plans and providing leadership for the assessment of student learning outcomes, accreditation, and budget development; ability and willingness to assist with advancement and resource development activities; experience with and commitment to equity and diversity; and an appreciation for and understanding of emerging trends in higher education especially those related to curriculum and pedagogy.

Reporting to Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson, the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost) is the chief educational and administrative officer of the university and is responsible for leading the efforts to achieve the university’s vision by implementing the strategic plan; ensuring that the campus is focused on liberal education and equity practices through planning; institutional policies and practices; preparation of strategic requests for resources; preparation of operating budgets; and allocation of institutional resources in support of the university’s plan. The Provost leads the university in its academic and student support planning and in the setting of policies and practices which lead to student success outcomes.
