Position Overview

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life for Leadership and Programming provides leadership and development for 1 Full-Time, Master’s Level Area Coordinators, as well as the Graduate and paraprofessional staff and students in their assigned buildings/areas. Additionally, the Assistant Director will provide departmental leadership for all programmatic aspects of Housing and Residence Life, including the RA programming model, as well as advisement for the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Hall/Area Councils. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for providing leadership on student staff and resident recognition. The Assistant Director is a member of the department’s central leadership team and is responsible for providing departmental leadership with emergency management and crisis intervention. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in student personnel, higher education administration, or a related field
  • Three to Five Years in residence hall administration, including experience as a live-in staff member
  • Experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and application of student development theory in a residence hall setting
  • Experience working autonomously and the ability to exercise excellent judgement
  • Desire to work with and address the needs of a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

I. Staff Supervision and Development: 15%

The Assistant Director is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and development for the staff in assigned residential communities. Specific responsibilities include: Direct supervision of one Area Coordinator who manages 2 communities (up to 847 resident students); Indirect supervision of one Graduate Assistant, 2 HRAs, and 15 RAs

The Assistant Director is responsible for serving as a member of the department’s central leadership team that provides overall leadership and direction within the department. Specific responsibilities include: Participating in processes enacted to set policies and/or develop procedures; Assisting with long-range planning efforts; Assisting in the creation and execution of the mission, vision, and goals of the Department

III. Community Development: 10%

The Assistant Director is responsible for working with the staff in assigned residential communities to ensure the development of positive and vibrant atmosphere. Specific responsibilities include: Implementing creative and innovative methods of developing connections between residents; Helping foster an environment where the academic success of residents can be realized; Providing continuity and guidance for any learning communities housed in their assigned area; Assisting in the department’s response to student conduct cases, roommate conflicts, and other resident concerns

IV. Administration: 5%

The Assistant Director is responsible for working with the staff in assigned residential communities to ensure that administrative and operational procedures are well managed. Specific responsibilities include: Ensuring that the overall administrative operations are properly managed. This includes building occupancy, damage billing, management of keys, etc.; Assist staff with the development of relationships with central office staff, housekeeping, housing craft, zone 3 maintenance, and other campus partners; Ensuring that budgetary and fiscal procedures of each community are well managed

The Assistant Director is responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents. Specific responsibilities include: Assist staff with the development of relationships with WSSU PD, Ram Assist, and other offices necessary to manage crisis situations; Ensure that staff maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources; Participating in year-round duty rotation that provides support to the staff and residential population; Maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources

VII. Departmental Programming: 25%

The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating the overall direction and evaluation of departmental programs designed to enhance the academic success and retention of residential students. Specific responsibilities include: Establishing, maintaining, and updating a programming model consistent with the goals of the department and University that will enhance student engagement; Providing direction for evening and weekend programs consistent with the University Strategic Plan; Developing academic initiatives, interventions, strategies, and learning outcomes for specific and diverse residential populations based on student need and developmental level; Collaborate with departmental partners to ensure students’ programming needs are being met; Establish systems and methods for collecting and analyzing data for residential program assessment

VIII.Resident Hall Association (RHA) Advising and Student Recognition: 25%

The Assistant Director serves as the primary advisor for the Resident Hall Association (RHA). Specific responsibilities include: Developing a nationally recognized RHA that is noted for its leadership and service on campus; Providing individual and team development opportunities for the RHA Exec Board and General Body; Attending RHA meetings and programs as they work to accomplish their goals; Serving as a resource regarding the development and maintenance of the area/hall council; Overseeing the Executive Board election process; Establishing trainings for the RHA Executive Board and Hall Councils; Ensuring that RHA is affiliated with state, regional, and national organizations; Working with departmental partners to ensure the development and implementation of processes for student staff and resident recognition.; Coordinating the annual year-end awards process and banquet for the department; Developing and implementing creative mechanisms for on-going student staff and resident recognition.
